The summer has just begun, and already there’s a “Summer Showdown” in the horse racing world – Saturday's $2 million Stephen Foster Stakes G1) at Churchill Downs.
Reigning Horse of the Year Sovereignty returns to the scene of his 2025 Kentucky Derby (G1) victory as the 6-5 morning-line favorite in a compact five-horse field that also includes fellow stars and Grade 1 winners White Abarrio (3-1), Magnitude (7-2), and Baeza (6-1). Willy D’s (20-1) is also entered.
It may not be what handicappers are looking for to hit big on a single race, but betting options, including the Stephen Foster, include an All-Stakes Pick 5 and an All-Stakes Daily Double.
“It’s an awesome race,” said Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen, who trains Dubai World Cup (G1) winner Magnitude – coming in with a three-race winning streak. “The stars of racing have assembled. Magnitude still has more to prove, but I know he has a lot of confidence in himself by the way he’s prepared going into the race.”
In anticipation of a blockbuster field for the 1 1/8-mile Stephen Foster, Churchill Downs doubled the purse to $2 million, and three of the world’s top five older dirt horses will go at each other even before the elite summer meets at Saratoga and Del Mar begin.
“Stephen Foster Day has grown tremendously over the last several years, attracting some of the world’s best horses, and this purse boost helps solidify our losing weekend as a must-see premier racing event,” said Mike Anderson, President of Churchill Downs Racetrack.
The winner also earns an all-fees paid berth to the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland on Oct. 31 as part of the Breeders’ Cup “Win, and You’re In’’ Challenge Series.
The 45th running of the Stephen Foster is race 11 on the 12-race card with a post time of 6:14 p.m. ET (NBCSN, Peacock).
Among other graded stakes on the undercard are the $500,000 Fleur de Lis (G2) for fillies and mares at 1 1/8 miles and the $500,000 Wise Dan Stakes (G2) for 4-year-olds and up at 1 1/16 miles on the turf.
Sovereignty, trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, has been working up to the race in Saratoga, recently breezing 4 furlongs in 50.00 seconds (June 21). The 4-year-old Into Mischief colt also won the Belmont Stakes (G1), the Jim Dandy Stakes (G2), and the Travers Stakes (G1) to complete his Horse of the Year season.
He was beaten two lengths by White Abarrio in his 2026 debut in the Oaklawn Handicap (G2). Baeza, winner of the Pennsylvania Derby (G1), ran third in the Alysheba Stakes (G2) at Churchill Downs on May 1 in his first race for Mott, who now trains the horse following the death of previous trainer John Shirreffs.
White Abarrio, the 7-year-old nearly white son of Race Day, has come through with huge victories, including the 2023 Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1), the 2025 Pegasus World Cup (G1), and a last-out two-length win over Sovereignty in the Oaklawn Handicap, with Preakness Stakes (G1) winner Journalism third. He has amassed earnings of $8.4 million (26-11-3-3), but his last visit to Churchill Downs did not end well – he finished 16th in the 2022 Derby.
“It’s really exciting to be back here, and we’re really looking forward to Saturday,” Joseph said. “The horse has settled in well, and everything has gone according to plan.”
Magnitude, a 4-year-old son of Not This Time, comes into the race with a three-race winning streak – the Clark Stakes (G2) at Churchill Downs on Nov. 28, the Razorback Handicap (G3) at Oaklawn Park on Feb. 28, and then his win in Dubai a month later. He’s earned $8.5 million with a 13-7-2-1 record.
Joseph entered two other horses in the race, but Forged Steel and Navajo Warrior did not ship in from Saratoga and will be scratched.
Willy D’s, based at Churchill Downs, is cross-entered in Saturday’s $250,000 Texas Turf Classic Stakes at Lone Star Park. With the two scratches, it seems likely trainer Mike Maker might just opt for the Stephen Foster.
And why not? The purse distribution for the Stephen Foster is $1,060,000 for first, $450,000 for second, $250,000 for third, $140,000 for fourth, and $100,000 for fifth. The winner of the Lone Star race earns $150,000, plus Willy D’s, a winner of the Kentucky Cup Classic (G3) is already at Churchill Downs.
The best riders in the business are the best horses, so the race should be super competitive from the moment the gates spring open – it's Irad Ortiz, Jr., aboard White Abarrio, Flavien Prat aboard Baez, Junior Alvarado on Sovereignty, and Jose Ortiz riding Magnitude.
The only real closer in the field seems to be Baeza, while White Abarrio may be content to hang in third behind expected early pacesetter Willy D’s, with Magnitude and Sovereignty right behind.
Last year’s edition was pretty good, too, with Mindframe upsetting 2024 Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) winner Sierra Leone, 2024 Derby winner Mystik Dan (fourth), and 2025 Dubai World Cup (G1) winner Hit Show (fifth).
