The Personal Ensign Stakes was inaugurated in 1948 as the Firenze Handicap. The race was later known as the John A. Morris Handicap before being renamed in 1997 in honor of Hall of Fame mare Personal Ensign, who retired undefeated after winning all 13 of her career starts.
The race has been held at Saratoga Race Course since 1986 and is currently contested at 1⅛ miles on dirt. Abel Tasman established the race record at the current distance when she won the 2018 edition in 1:47.19.
Recent winners include Vexatious in 2020, Letruska in 2021, Malathaat in 2022, Idiomatic in 2023, Raging Sea in 2024 and Thorpedo Anna in 2025.
