Forego Stakes History & Notable Winners

The Forego Stakes was inaugurated in 1980 at Belmont Park as the Forego Handicap and is named in honor of Hall of Fame champion Forego, who was voted Horse of the Year three consecutive times from 1974 through 1976.

The race moved to Saratoga Race Course in 1982 and was shortened to 7 furlongs. It received Grade III status in 1983, was upgraded to Grade II in 1984 and became a Grade I event in 2001.

Mitole holds the 7-furlong race record after winning the 2019 Forego in 1:20.80. Other recent winners include Win Win Win, Yaupon, Cody's Wish, Gunite and Mullikin.

Book'em Danno won the 2025 Forego Stakes under jockey Paco Lopez for trainer Derek Ryan, completing the 7 furlongs in 1:22.43.
