The Red Smith Stakes is a Grade II American Thoroughbred horse race for horses aged three and older, contested over 1 3/8 miles on the turf at Belmont at The Big A in Ozone Park, New York. It’s named in honor of Walter “Red” Smith, a Pulitzer Prize-winning sportswriter, and is one of the marquee fall turf marathon events in the New York racing circuit.
The 2025 Red Smith Stakes is scheduled for November 1st.
In the 2025 Red Smith Stakes, Cugino earned victory by a nose in the 1 3/8-mile turf marathon at Belmont at The Big A. Past winners include Integration, Boisterous, and Grassy; they often return to grade-level long turf races later in the season, making this a key event for bettors and turf handicappers alike.
