What is the Bing Crosby Stakes?
The Bing Crosby Stakes is a Grade I Thoroughbred race held annually at Del Mar Racetrack in Del Mar, California. Contested at 6 furlongs on the dirt for horses aged three and older, it is the premier sprint race of the Del Mar summer meet and a Breeders' Cup Challenge Series "Win and You're In" qualifier, with the winner receiving an automatic, fees-paid starting position in the Breeders' Cup Sprint at Keeneland in October. Inaugurated in 1946 and named in honor of Bing Crosby, the legendary entertainer who co-founded Del Mar Racetrack in 1937 with Pat O'Brien and a group of Hollywood celebrities, the race has grown into one of the most prestigious sprint events in American horse racing. Crosby was not only one of the most celebrated entertainers of the 20th century but also a passionate horseman who owned and bred Thoroughbreds throughout his life. The race record of 1:07.65 was set by Lord Nelson under Flavien Prat for trainer Bob Baffert in 2016. Prat holds the all-time jockey record with six wins, while Baffert and Bruce Headley each hold the trainer record with four victories.

The Bing Crosby Stakes has produced some of the most celebrated sprint performances in California racing history. Lovesick Blues gave trainer Librado Barocio and jockey Geovanni Franco a 2025 victory in 1:08.74 for Mia Familia Racing Stable, the five-year-old rallying from off the pace to deliver a popular upset. The Chosen Vron became only the second back-to-back winner in the modern era of the race, capturing consecutive editions in 2023 (1:09.24) and 2024 (1:08.99) under Hector Isaac Berrios for trainer J. Eric Kruljac. American Theorem gave trainer George Papaprodromou and jockey Joe Bravo a 2022 win in 1:08.67 for Kretz Racing, the same combination that won the Triple Bend at Churchill Downs that same year. Dr. Schivel gave trainer Mark Glatt and jockey Flavien Prat a 2021 score in 1:10.47, the son of Violence completing a banner season on the Southern California sprint circuit.
