Is Growth Equity Worth the Investment?

Seth Klarman names most of his horses using financial, business, and economic terms. In the Belmont Stakes, the billionaire investor who runs The Baupost Group (which has $20 billion in assets under management) will be represented by Klaravich Stables, with Growth Equity and Emerging Market.

The duo is trained by Chad Brown, who has a third Belmont runner in Ottinho. Both owner and trainer, who have been partners for years in the horse racing business, are seeking their first victory in the Belmont. They teamed up to win the Preakness Stakes (G1) twice, with Cloud Computing in 2017 and Early Voting in 2022.

While Emerging Market is better known – he won the Louisiana Derby (G2) but ran 10th in the Kentucky Derby (G1) -- Growth Equity comes into the Belmont off a win in the Peter Pan Stakes (G3) on May 9, a stepping stone to the Belmont.

Manny Franco has the call on Saturday aboard the 3-year-old son of Nyquist, who is 12-1 on the morning-line.

“Growth Equity is in great form,” Brown said. “He’s a late bloomer that is getting better as I run him longer, which I had hoped for, but I needed to see – he’s not a very big horse. The last number he earned at a mile and an eighth really gave me reason to consider him for the Belmont.”

Prior to driving a two-length win in the Peter Pan at 1 1/8 miles, Brown wasn’t sure Growth Equity could be effective at a distance.

Perhaps he’d perform better as a sprinter, but he progressed a furlong in distance in each of his four starts – two seconds followed by two wins.

Brown said despite a sprint influence in his breeding, his performances on the track have done the talking.

“That’s why I never really committed him to a race like this early on – I was looking at him thinking, ‘if he can get a mile and an eighth, I’ll take it,’ but he did it so well,” Brown said. “He bounced out of there [the Peter Pan] good, and I like the way the horse is doing.”

Growth Equity was purchased for $425,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Klarman is 0-for-4 in the Belmont; Brown is 0-for-5.

Growth Equity Race Scenario

Expect Growth Equity to race close to the pace but behind quicker stablemate Emerging Market. While the 1 ¼-mile distance is a step up, he has improved with distance in all four races and was impressive, winning by two lengths in the 1 1/8-mile Peter Pan on May 9 after breaking his maiden by 4 ¼ lengths at a mile at third asking in February.

He can handle the distance, but can he handle the likes of the Derby winner Golden Tempo and runner-up Renegade, two deep closers, and Florida Derby (G1) winner Commandment?

“It’s a solid field and whoever wins is going to have to run their ‘A’ race, for sure,’’ Brown said. “The pace of the race is a little suspect, which probably means there will be a couple of pace horses and a couple of mid-pack horses and definitely some horses with no speed — I know I have one of those. Hopefully, the horses will string out and organize, so not only Emerging Market, but all the horses can find their path, not too wide, and have a nice fair race for everybody.”
