The Perryville occupies an interesting place on the Keeneland Fall Meet calendar because it tests 3-year-olds at a demanding middle-sprint distance after most of the year's Triple Crown and classic-distance races are over. Seven furlongs asks for more stamina than a conventional six-furlong sprint without giving horses the slower early rhythm normally associated with two-turn route races. That combination can produce fields containing proven sprinters, horses cutting back from longer races and developing runners trying graded company for the first time.
That variety is useful from a betting perspective. Handicappers can compare early speed, finishing ability, recent form, and previous performances at or near seven furlongs rather than relying solely on raw sprint speed. Keeneland's main track also attracts strong national barns during the Fall Meet, so the Perryville regularly brings together runners from different circuits and form lines. As a result, post position, pace pressure, and the ability to finish through the final furlong matter as much as early speed.
The Perryville has also developed into a legitimate graded-stakes target. After running as a listed stakes race, it was elevated to Grade III status beginning in 2024. Recent editions have reinforced the race's quality: Grade I winner Gunite won in 2022, Gotham Stakes winner Raise Cain followed in 2023, Brunacini set the current stakes record in 2024, and Barnes produced an 8 1/4-length victory in 2025.

The Perryville Stakes was inaugurated at Keeneland in 1999 and is named for the Battle of Perryville, the major Civil War engagement fought southwest of Lexington in 1862. Although the race has been contested at different sprint distances during its history, it has been run at 7 furlongs since 2021.
The race has also twice appeared on particularly prominent Keeneland programs. Its 2015 and 2020 editions were staged on the undercard of the Breeders' Cup World Championships when Keeneland hosted the event. That connection helped expose the Perryville to a broader national racing audience even though the race itself is not a Breeders' Cup Win and You're In qualifier.
Recent winners illustrate the range of horses the Perryville can attract. Gunite entered the 2022 running as an established stakes performer and set what was then the stakes record at 1:23.21. Raise Cain, winner of the Gotham Stakes earlier in his 3-year-old season, prevailed in a head-to-head decision in 2023. In 2024, Brunacini drew into the race following scratches and produced a major upset, defeating Grade I winner Book'em Danno while lowering the stakes record to 1:22.80.
Barnes added another notable performance in 2025. Trained by Bob Baffert and ridden by Jose Ortiz, he pulled away to win by 8 1/4 lengths in 1:23.45. The victory continued Perryville's recent run of nationally recognizable 3-year-olds and confirmed the race as an important late-season target for sophomores suited to one-turn racing.
| Year | Winner | Jockey | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 | Barnes | Jose Ortiz | 1:23.45 |
| 2024 | Brunacini | Luan Machado | 1:22.80 |
| 2023 | Raise Cain | Luis Saez | 1:23.58 |
| 2022 | Gunite | Tyler Gaffalione | 1:23.21 |
