Woodbine Mile Odds: Notable Speech, Deterministic Face-Off; Picks

Deterministic has been remarkably consistent at racing’s highest levels heading into Saturday’s $1 million Woodbine Mile (G1).

The 5-year-old trained by Miguel Clement has won six straight stakes races, a streak that includes four Grade 1 triumphs.

All good things come to an end, and Deterministic faces a stellar lineup including Notable Speech, the defending Woodbine Mile and Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) winner.

Bet Deterministic: Can He Make it Seven in a Row?

The Woodbine Mile, a Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” race, awards an automatic berth to the Breeders’ Cup Mile in addition to the seven-figure purse.

Deterministic most recently captured the Fourstardave (G1) at Saratoga for the second straight year. The latest was his greatest, according to jockey Kendrick Carmouche, who was aboard for all six wins.

“That was the most impressive win for me,” Carmouche said.  “I thought he was at his top peak and feeling awesome. That was the best one for me.”

Deterministic (2-1) might need to reach an even higher level to contend with Notable Speech, the 2025 Eclipse Champion Male Turf Horse trained by Charlie Appleby for Godolphin.

Notable Speech 1-1 Betting Favorite

Notable Speech, the even-money favorite, has won four of his last six outings, all Grade 1 triumphs. He most recently won comfortably in the City of York Stakes (G1) at York.

“The turning track at Woodbine suits his run style particularly well, and he tends to be at his best when there is a good, strong pace to aim at, which he should get here,” said Appleby. “In terms of the track itself, the E.P. Taylor course is one of the premier turf courses in North America, so naturally that is something we take into account when prepping horses to go on to a Breeders’ Cup.”

History is on Notable Speech’s side. His win last year marked the third time in four years that the Godolphin, Appleby, and jockey William Buick partnership had captured the Mile. They previously won in 2022 with Modern Games and in 2023 with Master of the Seas. All three horses went on to win the Breeders’ Cup Mile later that same year, completing impressive Woodbine Mile-Breeders’ Cup Mile doubles.

Gas Me Up returned to locally-based trainer Kevin Attard after an extended California stay in the Peter Eurton barn and delivered a nose victory in the King Edward Stakes (G2) in mid-August. The 6-year-old is always a factor at Woodbine, where he has a 4-0-1 record in 6 turf races. He ran third to Notable Speech in last year’s Woodbine Mile.

Irish Aces, only a head back in third in the King Edward, is back for another try.

Like Notable Speech, Archivist also made the trip over from England for this engagement. He carries a two-race winning streak into the race, having beaten lower-level company at Goodwood and York.

France is represented by the Irish-bred Silius, the winner last time out of the Prix Messidor (G3) at Chantilly.

Post time for the Woodbine Mile is 5:20 p.m. Eastern

All in all, this Woodbine Mile should be another outstanding renewal. So that takes us to that time again for …
