Kentucky Derby & Oaks News (April 17)

Undefeated Good Cheer gave every sign she’s ready to take on all comers in the Kentucky Oaks (G1) at Churchill Downs on May 2.

The 3-year-old filly posted a 5-furlong workout on Thursday at the Downs in 59.40 seconds – the fastest of 10 at the distance.

The likely Oaks favorite with regular exercise rider Edvin Vargas aboard, broke off about two lengths behind stablemate Saucier. After an opening quarter mile in 23.60, Good Cheer ranged up outside as the pair completed the work together.

“The work was executed very well,” trainer Brad Cox said. “She was meant to sit a couple of lengths off her workmate and ranged up alongside at the quarter pole. She eased away a little bit on the gallop out. Overall, I thought it was a really good move. She’s doing really well. I was really happy with her, and Edvin was very happy with her. She’s just a solid filly.”

Good Cheer is 6-for-6, with three consecutive Grade 2 victories – the Golden Rod, the Rachel Alexandra, and the Fair Grounds Oaks.

“When horses are undefeated, you can feel a little bit of added pressure,” Cox said. “That’s all part of it. It’s a good position to be in. Hopefully, we can pull through.”

Cox is a two-time Oaks winner. He won with Monomoy Girl in 2018 and with Shedaresthedevil in 2020.

Cox also trains Florida Derby (G1) winner Tappan Street, who has a scheduled workout on Friday at Payson Park in Florida.
