Four Wheel Drive
The 36th Breeders’ Cup opened with a wire-to-wire victory by Four Wheel Drive in the $1 million Juvenile Turf Sprint (G2) on Friday at Santa Anita Park.
Breeze Easy LLC’s Four Wheel Drive broke well under Irad Ortiz, and was never seriously tested over the five-furlong sprint. In the stretch, 12-1 shot Chimney Rock tried to mount a challenge, and wound up second in the 12-horse field, three-quarters of a length behind.
Another Miracle was third, followed by Kimari, Dr. Simpson, Encoder, Dream Shot, Alligator Alley, Cambria, A’Ali, King Neptune and Band Practice.
Four Wheel Drive, a son of 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah improved his record to 3-0 for trainer Wesley Ward, who also sent out Kimari and Cambria.
The winner returned $5 for a $2 win bet. Runner-up Three Diamonds Farm’s Chimney Rock is trained by John Sadler and ridden by Jose Ortiz, Irad’s brother.
