The 147th Kentucky Derby (G1) is Saturday, May 4th, 2024.
A maximum field of 20 is likely, but let’s look at the tentative field: Unbeaten Essential Quality (5-for-5), winner of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1), Southwest Stakes (G3) and the Blue Grass (G2) in his last three starts, is considered the top Derby contender.
Six-time Derby winner Bob Baffert has a few Derby probables in Rebel (G2) winner Concert Tour, Medina Spirit and Hozier.
Louisiana Derby (G2) winner Hot Rod Charlie is also set for the Derby, along with Jeff Ruby Steaks (G3) winner Like the King, Florida Derby winner (G1) Known Agenda, Santa Anita Derby winner (G1) Rock Your World, Wood Memorial (G2) winner Bourbonic, Midnight Bourbon, and Mandaloun.
Others among the top 20 include Highly Motivated, Helium, Panadol, Soup and Sandwich, Dynamic One, Crowded Trade, Sainthood, Rombauer, and Proxy.
Recently off the Derby trail are Rebel’s Romance and Greatest Honour. Life Is Good, also trained by Baffert, sustained a slight injury and was taken off the Derby trial a few weeks ago.
