Breeders' Cup 2026: Sovereignty Rules Breeders’ Cup Classic; Forever Young Denied

Sovereignty was simply sensational in the final race of his career, taking charge in the stretch and blowing past the leaders for a thrilling victory in the $7 million Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) at Keeneland on Saturday.

This may have been the smallest field in Breeders' Cup Classic history, but it didn't matter how many were running on this day against Sovereignty.

The 4-year-old Into Mischief colt settled nicely behind pace-setting stablemate Knightsbridge under regular rider Junior Alvarado. When he hit the top of the stretch four wide, Sovereignty unleashed a devastating late run and beat The Puma by 1 1/4 lengths.

"At the three-quarter pole, he switched to the right lead, and I couldn't wait until we turned for home," Alvarado said. "I knew the power I had underneath me. He was just spectacular."

Sovereignty ($5.94 for a $2 win bet), trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott for Godolphin, defeated one of the toughest Classic fields in recent years. Defending champion Forever Young was primed for a repeat, but never seriously challenged and finished fifth. Kentucky Derby (G1) and Belmont Stakes (G1) winner Golden Tempo was way too far back to have an impact and finished sixth.

Knightsbridge, also owned by Godolphin and trained by Mott, ran third, followed by T O Password, Forever Young, Golden Tempo and Napoleon Solo.

Winning time for the 1 ¼ miles was 2:00.36.

"This horse is a runner," Mott said. "He's a loaded horse in anybody's hands."

Sovereignty missed the Breeders' Cup Classic last year after spiking a fever days before the race. He still was voted Horse of the Year after winning the Kentucky Derby, Belmont, Jim Dandy Stakes (G2) and Travers Stakes (G1).

The plan was to get back to the Breeders' Cup in 2026. His 4-year-old campaign got off slowly with a runner-up finish in the Oaklawn Handicap (G2) and a third in the Stephen Foster Stakes (G1). He came back into top form and won the Whitney Stakes (G1) at Saratoga on Aug. 8.

And now he's ready to be retired to stud at Darley's Jonabell Farm, just a few miles from Keeneland. Final racing resume: 13-8-3-1 and earnings of more than $10.4 million.

Breeders' Cup Winning Payoffs

There we no huge shockers in the 43rd Breeders' Cup, with the highest payout on a $2 win bet Saturday being $13.24 by Kathynmarissa in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1).

  • Benvenuto Cellini ($8.52) in the Turf
  • Nitrogen ($3.58) in the Distaff
  • Deterministic ($7.58) in the Mile
  • T O Elvis ($7.58) in the Sprint
  • Kathynmarissa ($13.24) in the Filly & Mare Turf

  • Bacio ($6.36) in the Turf Sprint
  • Ways and Means ($4.14) in the Filly & Mare Sprint.

Breeders' Cup Recaps

Breeders' Cup Turf: Benvenuto Cellini Rolls

Benvenuto Cellini ($8.52) found an opening between horses in the stretch and went on for an impressive victory in the $5 million Breeders' Cup Turf (G1), giving trainer Aidan O'Brien and jockey Ryan Moore their third wins at the Breeders' Cup.

Sent off at 3-1, Benvenuto Cellini came into the race off a 16th-place finish in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (G1) on Oct. 4. But the 3-year-old Frankel colt rebounded and returned to his best form at the gith time. Map of Stars finished second, with O'Brien-trained Diamond Necklace third.

O'Brien now has 24 Breeders' Cup victories, including eight in the Breeders' Cup Turf, more than any other trainer. His other two wins, both with Moore aboard, came Friday in the BC Juvenile Turf (G1) with Haffner and the BC Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) with Sun Goddess.

Breeders' Cup Distaff: Nitrogen Comes Through as 3-5 Favorite

Nitrogen ($3.58) made the third time a charm as the 4-year-old filly defeated Fully Subscribed and won the $2 million Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1).

Trained by Hall of Famer Mark Casse, Nitrogen ran third in the BC Juvenile Fillies (G1) in 2024 and second in the BC Distaff last year.

Nitrogen, ridden by Jose Ortiz, improved her 2026 record to four victories and two seconds in seven starts and boosted her career earnings to more than $4 million. Eclipse Award-winner as 3-year-old champion filly in 2025, Nitrogen is a top contender for champion older female.

Breeders' Cup Mile: Deterministic Dethrones Notable Speech

Deterministic ($12.10) avenged a loss to Notable Speech last month on racing's biggest stage with a solid victory over the defending champion in the $2 million Breeders' Cup Mile (G1).

Piloted by 42-year-old Kendrick Carmouche, Deterministic broke from the rail and stayed there as Cabo Spirit set the pace from the outside, with Notable Speech, the even-money favorite, well back in the field of 14.

Deterministic, trained by Miguel Clement, seized control at the top of the stretch and held off a late charge by Notable Speech to win by three-quarters of a length. Winning time was 1:34.52.

Deterministic has won four of five starts this year – three Grade 1s – and is a top contender for champion older turf male.

Breeders' Cup Sprint: T O Elvis Stuns Englishman

In perhaps the biggest surprise of the Breeders' Cup, Japan's T O Elvis ($7.58) staged a tremendous rally and overtook 4-5 favorite Englishman to win the $2 million Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1).

T O Elvis, racing for the first time since winning the Churchill Downs Stakes (G1) on May 2, didn't seem to have much of a chance as Englishman, with Jose Ortiz aboard, opened a large lead in the stretch.

But the 4-year-old Kentucky-bred son of Volatile, urged on by Ryusei Sakai, turned on the speed and cruised past Englishman for a 1 ¼-length victory.

Sakai is the regular rider aboard Forever Young, who was seeking to win the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) for the second year in a row aboard Forever Young.

Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf: Kathynmarissa

Kathynmarissa ($13.24) ran down longshot Gimme a Nother in the final strides and won the $2 million Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1) by three-quarters of a length, giving trainer Chad Brown his 21st Breeders' Cup win (and fifth in BC Filly & Mare Turf).

Ridden by Jose Ortiz, the 5-year-old daughter of Triple Crown champion American Pharoah came through with strong stretch run for her third straight victory and fifth in her last six races.

Jancis was third, with even-money favorite Blue Bolt 11th of 12. Winning time for the 1 3/8 miles was 1:53.75.

Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile: Further Ado by a Nose

The wait for the photo finish took longer than race itself, but in the end, even-money favorite Further Ado ($4.02) prevailed by a nose over Owen Almighty in a wild, head-bobbing finish to win the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1).

“He ran a big race and Flavien gave him a great trip,” said winning trainer Brad Cox. “The horse on the inside ran a huge race too, neither deserved to lose.

“He got his nose down when it counted.”

The lone 3-year-old in the field of 10, Further Ado completed the mile in 1:34.50. Further Ado, a son of Gun Runner, also was pre-entered in the Classic, but Cox elected to run him in the Dirt Mile.

Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint: Bacio Fastest of All

Bacio ($6.36), ridden by Juan Hermamdez, shot to the lead early, never looked back and won the $1 million Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1) by two lengths, completing an unbeaten 4-0 campaign and all but clinching an Eclipse Award as champion male sprinter.

Trained by Wesley Ward, the 3-year-old colt is now a global star, with consecutive victories at Royal Ascot in June, York in August, and now at Ward's home track.

"We've got the fastest horse in the world,'' Ward said.

Cy Fair, winner of last year's BC Juvenile Turf Sprint, got up for second, followed by Starlust, winner of the 2024 BC Turf Sprint, in the field of 14. Shisospicy, winner of last year's BC Turf Sprint, was in contention in the stretch but dropped back and finished last.

Winning time for the 5 ½ furlongs was 1:04.64.

Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint: Ways and Means a Winner

Ways and Means ($4.14) put on a championship performance with a victory in the $1 million Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1), all but clinching an Eclipse Award as the nation's top female sprinter.

The 5-year-old mare was ridden perfectly by Flavien Prat, who stayed patient running in third before moving off the rail and cruising to a 6 1/4-length victory. Ways and Means, winning for the first time outside New York (she was 0-for-5), finishes her career with eight victories in 14 starts and over $2 million in earnings.

It was the fourth Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint win for trainer Chad Brown. Winning time for 7 furlongs was 1:21.76. Foie Gras was second and Explora third in the field of 11.
