How Sovereignty Won the Breeders’ Cup Classic

Sovereignty, trained by Bill Mott and ridden by Junior Alvarado, won the Classic from post 2. He was the 5-2 second choice on the morning line and came in off a win in the Whitney (G1) at Saratoga on Aug. 8, and he beat the defending champion, Forever Young, to do it.

What the Classic Result Means for Bettors

The Classic was a seven-horse race after Magnitude’s scratch. Forever Young went off as the 8-5 favorite, and Sovereignty was 9-5 in the final odds. Sovereignty won it and paid $5.94. The Puma ran 2nd at 17-1, and Knightsbridge was 3rd at 7-2, and the $1 exacta paid $31.30.

What’s Next: The Road to the 2027 Kentucky Derby

The Breeders’ Cup is over, and the next big bet is already on the board. The Road to the 2027 Kentucky Derby started in September, when Salahudin won the Iroquois at Churchill Downs, and Friday’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile was one of its biggest points races. Hughes won the Juvenile unbeaten for Bob Baffert, 2 1/4 lengths clear of American History, with Salahudin 3rd, and goes into the winter as the 2-year-old to beat.

The 153rd Kentucky Derby is Saturday, May 1, 2027, at Churchill Downs, and the major prep races run from January to April, so the contenders will change. Here’s where to follow it on US Racing:
