Post 5 and Pace: Hughes' Trip

Two need the lead from outside him, and the favorite doesn't need it at all:

  • The break: He Is No Lie (8) and Coach Pope (7) both want to be forward from outside, so Prat can let them come and sit just off the pace.
  • Early pace: Honest, not fast. He Is No Lie needs the lead and Coach Pope dueled through the Breeders' Futurity. Hughes presses and settled third in the American Pharoah, so he can stalk.
  • The danger inside: Salahudin (3) has tactical speed and can get first run. American History (6), right outside him, may end up pressing him if the break is quick.
  • Late: American History is the closer to fear. Hughes' edge is speed: his 108 Brisnet is 12 points clear of anyone else in the field.

Breeders' Cup Juvenile Prediction: Can Hughes Win?

Why He Can
  • Unbeaten in four starts with three straight graded stakes wins, including the Del Mar Futurity (G1) and American Pharoah (G1).
  • Top last-out Brisnet figure in the field (108), 12 points clear of the next best.
  • Already proven at the Juvenile distance: won the 1 1/16-mile American Pharoah in 1:43.22.
Why He Might Not
  • Has never raced outside California and has no starts over Keeneland's surface.
  • Only one start around two turns so far.
  • At 1-1 he offers little value on top; American History won the Breeders' Futurity over this track and trip.

About a 40% chance to win (fair odds 3-2). American History is the main threat.

Hughes Breeders' Cup Juvenile Pick

The best horse in the race, but even money is a short price for a juvenile shipping east for the first time. Use him on top in exactas instead of a big straight win bet.
