The race was inaugurated in 1998 as the Virginia Derby. It developed into one of the leading turf races for 3-year-olds in the United States and has been won by champions including Kitten's Joy and English Channel.
When Colonial Downs introduced a new dirt race called the Virginia Derby in 2025, the historic turf race was renamed the Old Dominion Derby. The race retains the history of the original Virginia Derby and currently holds Grade III status.
