Baby Vino Steps Up After Pegasus Romp

By Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) winner Vino Rosso, Baby Vino carries some strong stamina influences on his pedigree, though his dam was a sprint performer and placed in sprint stakes. Dam sire, Discreetly Mine, was competitive at different distances and has a strong stamina impact.

Cosmo Stables is a small Arkansas-based operation owned by restoration company owner Marcus Osborn, his wife Chrystal, and father Smoky "James" Osborn. Baby Vino is only their third runner under the Cosmo banner. The Pegasus Stakes was their first stakes win.

Lindsay Shultz has been training since 2021 and saddled her first winner in January 2022.

She previously served as an assistant to standout trainer Tom Proctor and at Glen Hill Farm in Kentucky. She is a graduate of Darley’s Flying Start program. She’s now sent out more than 140 winners from 945 starters, including a couple of graded stakes winners.

It took five starts for Baby Vino to break his maiden, though he has really started to blossom. He debuted in late December at Oaklawn Park and after a couple of near misses finally graduated in a salty maiden special weight at 1 1/16 miles by 2 3/4 lengths on May 1. That performance led to the decision to run in the Pegasus at Monmouth a month ago.

After his 10-length romp in the Pegasus and a strong speed figure, the Haskell seemed like the next logical step.

“He showed us another gear [in the Pegasus],” Schultz said. “He’s maturing with each start. He had a lot of trouble in some of his previous starts but [the Pegasus] was a nice trip.”

Baby Vino Running Style

Baby Vino appears to be a versatile, forward-going type with improving tactical speed and a strong closing kick. In the Pegasus, he overcame some green behavior (tossing his head, drifting back and forth) to seize the lead on the turn and pull away to win impressively. He has shown the ability to rate or press the pace and finish strongly, so the 1 1/8-mile Haskell distance should be fine.

Overall, he should be considered a consistent sort who fits well in the Haskell field alongside Preakness Stakes (G1) winner Napoleon Solo.

Baby Vino Race Scenario

If there’s a decent pace, it may favor Baby Vino and is stalking/closing style.  He can sit off the speed and conserve energy, then unleash his strong finish. Monmouth’s track can play fair, and Baby Vino’s win over the track gives him a little boost.

Baby Vino Betting Advice

Overall, Baby Vino is a fun, feelgood story -- a late-developing colt from a small stable stepping into Grade 1 company off a blowout local win. He’ll face stiffer competition but enters with momentum and a strong upside. He is a must-use in the exotics but watch the tote board, the local star may be bet heavier than usual.
