The weather report for Kentucky Derby Day at Churchill Downs is looking mighty good at this point.
With rain and possible thunderstorms in the forecast earlier in the week at just around the 6:57 p.m. ET post time for Saturday’s $3 million Kentucky Derby (G1), that has all changed.
On Friday, according to AccuWeather, temperatures will be in the mid-to-high 70s with sunny and partly cloudy skies throughout the afternoon. From 6:30-7:30 p.m., the temperature is expected to be about 77 degrees with partly sunny skies – and a 2% chance of rain.
So, let’s expect a fast track for the 19-horse field for the 149th edition of the Run for the Roses, a race won last year by 80-1 longshot Rich Strike over a fast track.
The field for the 1 1/5-mile Derby has been shuffled over the past few days, with four horses scratched on Thursday for a variety of reasons.
Skinner, who got into the field as an also-eligible earlier in the week, was scratched due to an elevated temperature, as was Practical Move.
Continuar was pulled out due to not being fully it. Lord Miles, along with all of trainer Saffie Joseph’s other horses entered to run at Churchill, was scratched by the racing stewards after two of the trainer’s horses died at the track.
Forte, Tapit Trice, and Angel Empire are expected to be the top betting choices when the gates spring open on Saturday
