Every single year 20 horses are given their only shot at racing in the Kentucky Derby. Qualifying points are awarded to horses throughout the Kentucky Derby Prep Races season. Each colt must battle amongst other fierce competitors throughout the Road to the Kentucky Derby, racking up wins throughout the year.
The top five finishers of each race are given points. Deservingly, the first-place finisher earns the most points. Some races reward more points than others based on their significance. After the prep races are finished, the top 20 horses with the most points will have earned a spot at the Kentucky Derby starting gate.
How Are Kentucky Derby Odds Made?
The oddsmakers take many things into account before solidifying the odds. They’re usually released after the post-position draw is finished on Derby week. The post-position draw was on April 26th.
All of these odds are hand-picked by specialists. The oddsmakers take many things into account, such as previous wins for Kentucky Derby Prep Races, the trainers or jockeys for each horse, and even potential track conditions come race day. Many things go into the process of creating these odds, and they use decades of experience to ensure that the public is given a fair shake.
