The Grand National is a Grade II horse race held annually at Aintree Racecourse in Merseyside, England. It features thoroughbreds seven years old and older racing 4 miles 2 1/2 furlongs. The event has a rich history; to enter the Grand National, a horse must be at least seven years old. This age requirement has been in place since 2013 as part of updated BHA safety regulations.
The 2026 Grand National is scheduled to take place on April 11th.
The Grand National has seen many notable champions over the years, several of which went on to earn legendary status. Red Rum, the three-time winner (1973, 1974, 1977), remains the most iconic figure in the race’s history. Tiger Roll (2018, 2019), the first back-to-back winner since Red Rum, also stands out as one of the most significant modern champions in the sport.
