Breeders' Cup Distaff: Top 3 Contenders and a Longshot

The $2 million Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) is another one of the original seven races for the Breeders’ Cup and first contested at Hollywood Park in 1984.

The event, for older dirt fillies and mares, took a brief detour and was for five years known as the Ladies Classic (2008 through 2012). The brief name change was designed to appeal to a more broader audience with more simple terminology and the event was meant to anchor what was an entire day of championship races for females.

Now back to Distaff and on the main card Saturday, the race will go off as the 10th on the day with a post time of 4:58 p.m. ET. The race will be televised by USA Network and Peacock.

Through 44 runnings, favorites have won 18 times for a 44% strike rate. Horses starting at odds shorter than 5-1 have won 30 of the 41 runnings for a 73% clip.

Yet despite the tendency toward favorites, major upsets include Spain (55-1 in 2000), Pleasant Home (30-1 in 2005), Adoration (40-1 in 2003), and Marche Lorraine (49-1 in 2021).

The pre-entries will be announced on Wednesday, Oct. 21; the post-position draw and morning-line odds will be revealed on Monday, Oct. 26.

Note: Jockeys listed are from the horse’s previous race; changes are likely.

Breeders’ Cup Distaff: Top 3 Contenders

Nitrogen (Jose Ortiz, Mark Casse)

She is the clear top contender and solid early favorite. The 2025 champion 3-year-old filly and last year’s Distaff runner-up has been exceptionally consistent (never worse than third in 18 starts) and has had a solid 2026 which includes a 13-length win in the Ogden Phipps Stakes (G1) at Saratoga, a strong second to Sovereignty in the Whitney Stakes (G1), and an easy Beldame Stakes (G1) win under Jose Ortiz. The daughter of the recently deceased legend Medaglia d’Oro has a powerful early turn of foot, but also some tactical ability if challenged. Her advantage is her really big figures and her class edge.

Betting angle: She will be heavily bet, for sure, and deserves to be. She’ll also be hard to beat if she shows up with her “A game” so she’s probably a good bet to key and wheel on all exotics tickets.

What to watch: The tote board. If by chance she goes off above even-money she will add some extra value.

Splendora (Flavien Prat, Bob Baffert)

The 2025 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) winner has thrived while stretching out this year with five wins from six starts and multiple Grade 2 route scores, including the Locust Grove Stakes (G2) at Churchill Downs in mid-September as her final BC prep. The Audible mare’s early speed is her weapon which thanks to her early figures indicates she can hold that speed to the wire. Despite a Hall of Fame career and managing the careers of several talented distaffers, Baffert has never won this race.

Betting angle: For the first time in a while she won’t be the favorite. She won’t be long odds, by any means, but if you like her to beat the favorite she’s going to offer more value here than she has in a while.

What to watch: The draw. With her speed she doesn’t want to draw inside and she doesn’t want to draw outside. If she ends up somewhere in the middle and with Nitrogen to her outside she will increase her upset chances.

Fully Subscribed (Flavien Prat, Chad Brown)

Fully Subscribed may be the best overlay. She was well beaten by Nitrogen in the Phipps, but has since reeled off three straight graded wins, including a dominant 9 ¾-length score in the Personal Ensign Stakes (G1) and a win over just two (yet talented) rivals in the Spinster Stakes (G1) at Keeneland over the exact Distaff course and distance. The Chad Brown-trained Tiz The Law filly is peaking, has proven stamina, and as a stalker will benefit if early speed compromises Nitrogen.

Betting angle: So far the experts have referred to this on as an overlay and if true, she’ll offer good value. She is a must-use in exotics and on top if you think she’s got upset potential.

What to watch: A clean and uneventful trip. And if Prat stays here or sticks with the Baffert.

Longshot to Watch: Super Corredora

The 3-year-old filly by Gun Runner is the reigning juvenile champion after her win last year in the BC Juvenile Fillies (G1) and after a bumpy early 2026 with two very uncharacteristically poor efforts, she got a break and returned with a decisive wire-to-wire score in the Zenyatta Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita, beating older fillies and mares by 2 ¾ lengths.

She has continued to train well at Santa Anita, including a recent five-furlong work in :59. Her running style is pure early speed, she prefers to lead and has done her best work on the front end. If the fractions get hot with the presence of both Nitrogen and Splendora she could try to sit off them and still hold on to a minor award..

Why a value bet? Her recent dominant form off a layoff, and attractive odds give her legitimate upset potential.

The risk: The pace and where she’ll be early. With only a single win in a year, she’s definitely carrying a question mark on her back.
