The race was inaugurated in 1984 as the King's Bishop Stakes. It was originally named for King's Bishop, a multiple graded stakes winner trained by Hall of Fame horseman H. Allen Jerkens.
The race received Grade III status in 1987, was upgraded to Grade II in 1992 and became a Grade I event in 1999.
In 2017, the New York Racing Association renamed the King's Bishop Stakes in honor of H. Allen Jerkens, the Hall of Fame trainer known as the "Giant Killer" for upsetting several of racing's most celebrated champions.
Runhappy established the race record when he won the 2015 edition in 1:20.54. Other notable winners include Housebuster, Lost in the Fog, Drefong, Jackie's Warrior and Jack Christopher.
Recent winners include Echo Town in 2020, Jackie's Warrior in 2021, Jack Christopher in 2022, One in Vermillion in 2023, Domestic Product in 2024 and Patch Adams in 2025.
