The 2026 Kentucky Derby (G1) field is taking shape with the usual late shuffling for position in the 20-runner gate and, as usual, a few key defections or late decisions opening doors for horses on the bubble.
With a single prep remaining this weekend and no likely runner expected to emerge, the Road to the Kentucky Derby points standings list is set after the final major preps -- Florida Derby (G1), Arkansas Derby (G1), Blue Grass Stakes (G1), Santa Anita Derby (G1), Wood Memorial (G2), etc.
If even two to four horses from the top 20 drop out (common in the final weeks due to minor issues, trainer/owner preferences, or other factors), it creates room. But for whom?
The Bill Mott-trained Chief Wallabee and Gotham Stakes (G3) winner Iron Honor currently sit firmly on the bubble at 21st and 22nd with 50 points each, and as it stands now will be left on the outside looking in if the European and Japanese trio of runners – Six Speed, Danon Bourbon, and Wonder Dean – all make the trip to Louisville as expected.
Risen Star Stakes (G2) runner-up Chip Honcho sits right behind with 49 points and is followed by American Pharoah Stakes (G1) winner Intrepido (38 points), multiple graded stakes-placed Universe (38 points), and Virginia Derby runner-up Grittiness (36 points).
Wathnan Racing’s Commandment sits atop the leaderboard with 150 points and is the legit favorite. The Brad Cox trainee is undefeated in three starts this year, including the Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) and Florida Derby (G1).
Second in the points standings is Further Ado, with 135 pts, and the impressive Blue Grass winner also hails from the Brad Cox conglomerate. He has a win at Churchill already, having taken the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G2) last year as a juvenile.
Owner Mike Repole is never quiet, let alone at Derby time. This year, he co-owns Arkansas Derby winner Renegade with Robert and Lawana Low, who sit third with 125 points.

At least a couple of horses in the current top 20 are questionable or unlikely to run, with a few more undecided. Key recent defections and uncertainties include:
Rebel Stakes (G2) winner Class President, who would have made the Derby gate with his 50 points, but was scratched from the Blue Grass Stakes (G1), and then this week was pulled from the Triple Crown Trail with bone bruising.
Maiden winner Ottinho has 56 points from a second in the Blue Grass and third in the Withers Stakes (G3). Trainer Chad Brown indicated he’d like the Quality Road colt to make the gate, but his status remains uncertain three weeks out.
Jeff Ruby Steaks (G2) runner-up Stark Contrast, who is California-based for trainer Michael McCarthy, is also in the uncertain category. With 50 points, he’d make the gate, but the Caravaggio colt, who was second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1), seems destined for a turf career.
The aforementioned Gotham Stakes (G3) winner Iron Honor had a rough recent effort when seventh as the beaten favorite in the Wood Memorial and seems questionable at this stage for trainer Chad Brown.
Up to four also-eligibles can enter, and scratches can happen right up to race morning. That puts horses currently ranked 21-24 firmly in play.
Chief Wallabee is a particularly compelling "on the bubble" story. The Constitution colt showed talent early on with his maiden win and near-miss in the Fountain of Youth and handled traffic/positioning issues in the Florida Derby.
Defections are already underway, but changes to the top 20 are expected right up until the entry deadline on Saturday, April 25.
The four also-eligibles get a shot if late scratches occur, and it seems that Derby Week chaos has almost come as much a part of the tradition as the race itself.
This is classic Kentucky Derby drama: points get you close, but fitness, soundness, and connections decide the final 20 to break from the gate.
