Kentucky Derby runner-up Journalism is Preakness Stakes bound.
It took a while to decide, but co-owner Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners made the call Sunday on social media.
“Journalism has been grand’’ since the Kentucky Derby, the co-owners posted on X, and (trainer Michael McCarthy) has green-lighted him to head to the Preakness.
“We look forward to showcasing Journalism’s talents in Baltimore in such a coveted American Classic.’’
Sent off as the 3-1 favorite in the Kentucky Derby on May 3, Journalism ran a strong race but could not fight off Sovereignty, who won by 1 ½ lengths. The Derby winner is not running in the Preakness and will race next in the Belmont Stakes on June 7.
Journalism, the Santa Anita Derby (G1) winner, has remained at Churchill Downs since the Derby and has been galloping the past few days. McCarthy was at the track Sunday to watch Journalism gallop just over a mile under regular exercise rider Marc Witkowski.
