A chestnut gelding by Ghostzapper out of Dowager, Banishing has carved out a rugged and quietly effective career that brings him to the Pegasus World Cup with upside and intrigue.
Trained by David Jacobson and ridden by Jose Ortiz, the 6-year-old has shown adaptability across distances and surfaces while posting multiple graded stakes performances.
Last time out, Banishing put in a game effort in Oaklawn Park’s Ring the Bell Stakes, rallying into second and showing the kind of tactical speed and late change of gear that make him dangerous if there’s pace to chase. The effort was a solid prep for Gulfstream Park’s 1 1/8-mile test, especially given his ability to engage over distances from 6 furlongs to a 1 ¼ miles.
Banishing’s career arc blends sprint speed with staying power. He’s captured graded stakes honors, including the Charles Town Classic (G2) at 1 1/8 miles in August and the Oaklawn Mile (G3) in March. Those victories reflect a horse that can press the pace or settle into a stalking trip.
Jacobson brings modest but growing Pegasus World Cup experience; while he hasn’t scored in this event previously, his ability to get the most from a sturdy, battle-tested horse is part of what earned Banishing an invitation.
Weather and track conditions at Gulfstream will also play into Banishing’s chances. He is proven on fast and sealed surfaces, but given his tactical versatility — able to race near the lead or just behind it — he should be able to adapt if the track takes a hair of bias or kickback early. Those nuances could make a difference in a full Pegasus field where pace pressure and late kickers collide.
A longshot, indeed. A perfect trip might not be enough to get him on the board, but a top-five finish is not out of the question.
Notes: After making his first nine starts for breeder Godolphin and trainer Brendan Walsh, Banishing was sold for $80,000 to Lawrence Romans at the 2024 Fasig-Tipton Horses of Racing Age Sale … In his first start for his new connections, the gelding bore out badly in an optional claimer at Saratoga and was vanned off. He returned two months later and, since then, has been no worse than third in 14 of his 16 starts … He most recently breezed 4 furlongs in 49.80 on Jan. 15 at the Double M Training Center in Hot Springs, Arkansas.
