In the runup to the 150th Kentucky Derby (G1) on May 4, usracing.com continues with our Derby Top 10 contenders. Rankings will be updated periodically as Derby preps with qualifying points are contested.
A pair of 9-1 long shots, an 11-1 surprise winner, and an odds-on favorite ineligible to run in the Kentucky Derby (G1) combined to shake up our Derby Top 10.
Add the news that Locked, No. 1 in last month’s opening rankings, will miss the Sam F. Davis (G3) after spiking a fever, and there’s no clear-cut leader of the pack.
Shaking Up the Track: Underdogs Steal the Spotlight in Latest Races
Uncle Heavy ($20.60) and Hades ($20.40) pulled off upsets in the Withers (G3) and the Holy Bull (G3), respectively, on Saturday (Feb. 3). Both favorites, Lightline in the Withers and early top Derby contender Fierceness in the Holy Bull, finished third.
In the Southwest (G3), it was Mystik Dan ($24.80) rolling to an eight-length win for trainer Ken McPeek, and unbeaten Nysos, perhaps the best 3-year-old to date, romping0 by 7 1/2 lengths in the Robert B. Lewis (G3) for trainer Bob Baffert (he’s suspended by Churchill Downs; his horses aren’t Derby eligible).
With Todd Pletcher-trained Fierceness not firing for the second time in four starts – he did win the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) on Nov. 4 – the colt drops from No. 2 to No. 10 in the latest usracing.com rankings.
Locked, also trained by Pletcher, remains No. 1 by default. It’s still early, and the Breeders’ Futurity (G1) winner could be back on the work tab this weekend, with his 3-year-old debut to be decided afterward.
They may have been longshots entering last weekend, but the winners deserve to be included among the leading contenders. For now, anyway.
