In the days leading up to the 41st Breeders’ Cup at Del Mar in California, usracing.com is publishing profiles of the horses in the $7 million Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) on Saturday, Nov. 2. Profiles will be updated following the post-position draw on Monday, Oct. 28.
2024 Breeders’ Cup Classic Contender Profile: FIERCENESS
Pattern recognition is important in handicapping thoroughbreds, and no star in recent years was more predictable than Fierceness. Last year’s champion 2-year-old male alternated wins and losses in his first seven races. Entering the Travers Stakes, he was coming off a victory in the Jim Dandy, so he was expected to regress.
Will Fierceness win his second Breeders’ Cup race in the Classic?
Surprise, surprise. Fierceness held off superstar filly Thorpedo Anna by a head in the Travers, showing grit to match his world-class talent. The colt who was thought to need everything to go his way had won a heavyweight fight with an Amazon princess. In about two minutes he proved he had heart and could stay 1¼ miles.
A repeat performance in the Classic against the best field he’s ever faced could make Fierceness the Horse of the Year. Pletcher thinks he’s coming into the Nov. 2 race the right way.
“I think physically you can see a change in him,” Pletcher told drf.com. “He’s gotten bigger and stronger and gained weight.
“I think he’ll like a track like Del Mar. He liked Santa Anita and Gulfstream, which are speed-oriented tracks. I think Del Mar would be to his liking.”
Betting advice: Fierceness seems less suited to 10 furlongs than City of Troy and Forever Young, so John Velazquez must work out a trouble-free, stalking trip. The task is difficult but not impossible, and he’s worth a win bet at 5-1 or higher.
