April is the time when horseplayers are fixated on the Kentucky Derby (G1) and Kentucky Oaks (G1) picture. Halloween weekend at Keeneland and the Breeders' Cup feel like a long way off. But you've got to start somewhere, and that brings us to Saturday's $1.25 million Apple Blossom Handicap (G1) at Oaklawn Park, one of the biggest races on the calendar for fillies and mares 4 years old and up.
The winner gets an automatic berth in the Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1), and if history is any guide, it could mean a whole lot more. The last four females voted Horse of the Year -- Thorpedo Anna (2024), Havre de Grace (2011), Zenyatta (2010), and Azeri (2002) -- all used an Apple Blossom victory as a springboard for a championship season.
The only horse in this nine-horse field carrying a Grade 1 trophy is Nitrogen, a former stablemate of Thorpedo Anna. She'll be trying to bounce back from a third-place finish at 1-5 odds in last month's Azeri Stakes (G2) at Oaklawn, where 9-1 winner Majestic Oops and Regaled got the better of her on a sloppy track. Both horses will show up again on Saturday.
Last year's Distaff runner-up has turned in two sharp workouts at Oaklawn since that setback -- 4 furlongs in 46 4/5 seconds on March 22 and 5 furlongs in 1:01 on April 1. Caden Arthur, assistant trainer to Mark Casse, likes what he's been seeing on the training track.
"I think Nitrogen likes this fast track," Arthur said. "Hopefully, we can get that rather than the sealed one she ran on last time. Hopefully, we get the old Nitrogen back, and it kind of looks like it the way she's been training."

She managed to outrun Nitrogen by a length in the Azeri, but that outcome won't repeat itself. She's lost seven of her last nine races, and both wins came on wet surfaces. The morning line at 3-1 is too short given that form cycle.
Won one stake and hit the board in three others last year, but she's been off form this season -- two fifth-place finishes beaten a combined 16 1/4 lengths. Hard to get excited at any price with that 2026 form line.
Speedy California shipper ran a distant third in the Beholder Mile (G1) at Santa Anita in her only 2026 start. A recent bullet work suggests she could be on or near the early lead. Doubt she can last in Grade 1 company at a mile and sixteenth.
Finished second to stablemate Nitrogen in Oaklawn's Bayakoa Stakes (G3) two starts back, her only defeat in the last four races. The speed figures are unimpressive for this level, and she's stepping into her first Grade 1. Casse barn connection is the best thing she has going.
A need-to-lead type who went wire to wire in three of her four career wins, two of those in stakes. She's a likely pacesetter, and with Johnny V. in the irons -- a master at managing fractions -- she could put up measured splits and make this interesting late. Likes Oaklawn, where she was second in a Grade 3 last year.
This stalker ships in from Gulfstream after drawing off to a five-length win. Saffie Joseph Jr. consistently spots horses where they belong, and this one fits the profile of a trainer who knows how to get a horse ready off a layoff or a ship. Worth a look in the exotics at her morning-line number.
Brad Cox knows Oaklawn as well as anyone. She's a closer who will be coming from off the pace, and if Five G goes a little loose on the front end, Gaffalione will have her in the right spot. Cox-trained horses in Grade 1 spots at Oaklawn deserve respect.
Nitrogen is the bet. Whether she ends up at even money or a shade over, the form cycle points to a bounce-back effort on a fast Oaklawn surface, and the Casse barn is not sending mixed signals. The Azeri defeat on a sealed track looks like a legitimate excuse, and her two recent works support the theory that she's training back to her best.
For the exotics, key her on top and use Majestic Oops, Five G, Claret Beret and Star Attraction in the underneath slots of exactas and trifectas. The pace scenario sets up for a front-runner in Five G to hang around longer than chalk bettors might expect, and Majestic Oops remains a dangerous horse anywhere near a wet track -- even if the forecast stays dry.
