Alabama Stakes History & Notable Winners

The Alabama Stakes was inaugurated in 1872 and is named in honor of William Cottrell of Mobile, Alabama. According to the race's historical record, Cottrell was reluctant to have the event named directly after him, so they chose Alabama instead. The inaugural running was won by Woodbine.

The race has been contested at its current distance of 1¼ miles since 1917. Go For Wand established the Alabama Stakes record at the current distance when she completed the race in 2:00.80 in 1990.

The Alabama Stakes has been won by many of the leading fillies of their generations. Recent winners include Swiss Skydiver in 2020, Malathaat in 2021, Nest in 2022, Randomized in 2023, Power Squeeze in 2024, and Nitrogen in 2025.
