Se lleva a cabo el primer sábado de mayo de cada año en el hipódromo de Churchill Downs de Louisville, Kentucky. El evento, junto con el Preakness Stakes y el Belmont Stakes, forma parte de la Triple Corona del hipismo estadounidense.
El Kentucky Derby se ha convertido en una tradición anual del hipismo desde que se llevó a cabo por primera vez en 1875. La competencia es para caballos de tres años de edad y cubre una distancia de una y media millas (alrededor de dos kilómetros).
