Wise Dan Stakes Draws Nine for Exciting Betting Affair

The $500,000 Wise Dan Stakes (G2) headlines the turf portion of Stephen Foster Stakes Day at Churchill Downs on Saturday.

Run at 1 1/16 miles over Churchill’s Matt Winn Turf Course, the Wise Dan is race 10 on the 12-race card with a post time of 5:43 p.m. ET. The Dan precedes the $2 million Stephen Foster Stakes (G1), which features Horse of the Year Sovereignty taking on fellow Grade 1 winners White Abarrio, Magnitude, and Baeza.

The Wise Dan field of nine is topped by Lagynos, the 5-2 morning-line favorite seeking his fifth consecutive victory.

Wise Dan Stakes History

The race originated in 1983 as the Firecracker Handicap and was renamed to honor one of the greatest American turf horses of the modern era. Wise Dan captured the event in 2011 (his turf debut) and again in 2013, and was twice voted Horse of the Year, champion male turf horse, and champion older male in 2012 and 2013. He was inducted into racing’s Hall of Fame in 2020.

Other standout winners include Kitten’s Joy (2005), who became a leading sire; Miesque’s Approval (2006); Silver Max (2014); March to the Arch (2019); Set Piece (2021); and defending champion Brilliant Berti (2025).

Dale Romans has saddled four winners to lead all trainers, and five jockeys have ridden a couple of winners apiece, of which only two – Florent Geroux and Kent Desormeaux – remain active.

Wise Dan Stakes Odds: Can Lagynos make it five in a row?

Lagynos (5-2) enters in peak form and is the horse to beat, riding a four-race winning streak in stakes company that includes the Fair Grounds Stakes (G3), Muniz Memorial (G2), Churchill Downs’ Opening Verse Stakes, and the Arlington Stakes (G3). The consistent 5-year-old has been unplaced just once in 10 starts over this Matt Winn turf course, and he is a versatile, tactical runner who can press or stalk early pace before unleashing a strong finishing kick. The Steve Asmussen-trained son of Kantharos should get a favorable inside trip from post 2 with Kentucky Derby-winning jockey Jose Ortiz aboard. The earner of more than $2.3 million looks very much like the one to beat.

Top Challengers in Wise Dan

The Mike Maker-trained Chasing the Crown (9-2) exits a sharp closing second-place finish, beaten by a nose by Lagynos, in the 1-mile Opening Verse Stakes. The son of Skipshot has been excellent on the Louisville lawn with four wins and three seconds in eight Churchill turf starts. A confirmed closer with a potent late kick, the slight stretch-out and extra sixteenth of a mile could allow him to turn the tables on the favorite. Eclipse Award-winner Flavien Prat retains the mount, and he figures as the main danger and a strong win candidate as well as an underlay in the exotic bets.

Dresden Row (7-2), trained by Anthony Sciametta, Jr., is a consistent performer who rarely turns in a bad effort. Riding a three-race win streak, including an allowance over this course last month, he will be ridden by Irad Ortiz, Jr., and clearly brings reliability and tactical speed to a race that appears to lack an abundant early pace. He faces a class test at this graded level and against this company, but looks fit and ready. The son of Lord Nelson is a live candidate to hit the board or pull an upset if the favorites falter.

Recent Dinner Party Stakes (G3) winner and $1.5 million earner Fort Washington (5-1) is a solid third, a proven Grade 1 winner who brings a solid late kick and proven class to this spot. The Shug McGaughey trainee would likely prefer a bit more ground, and the expected lack of strong early pace may stunt his patented closing effort. Top jockey Junior Alvarado will be aboard, and the pair remains a logical exotic player who can hit the board if the pace of the race sets up for closers.

Brilliant Berti (8-1) won the Wise Dan last year, and though he has banked more than $2.2 million, he hasn’t won in five starts since. The Cherie DeVaux trainee is a versatile horse who can sit mid-pack or rally, but he will need to take a significant step forward to factor. As the defending champion with winning experience over this course and Brian Hernandez, Jr. aboard, he cannot be dismissed in the superfecta at the very least at what likely will be a reasonable price.

From the rail, Silent Heart (10-1) emerges as a live longshot. Mike Maker claimed the son of Heart to Heart for $100,000 after his most recent start six weeks ago. Aside from his last start of 2025, he has been a consistent performer in stakes company when at his best. The inside post and Luis Saez aboard give him every chance to save ground, and with a top effort, he can factor in the exotics as a live longshot.

Though he hasn’t won in more than a year, Mercante (8-1) is a significant superfecta threat off his recent performances. The son of two Breeders’ Cup winners in Gun Runner and Caressing, he has been hitting the board regularly with a second, a third, and two fourths in his last six starts. Trained by Brian Knippenberg and ridden by Florent Geroux, he is a steady, tactical type who should get a good trip from post 3. He looks like a logical superfecta inclusion and a horse that can pick up a piece of the purse.

Other longshots include: Whit Beckman-trained Flying Mohawk (15-1) and Patrick Biancine-trained Beach Gold (20-1).
