1. Taj Mahal (Morning Line 5/1) | Trainer: Brittany Russell | Jockey: Sheldon Russell

If you are handicapping strictly on Laurel Park form, Taj Mahal is your starting point. This Nyquist colt is three-for-three on this main track, and his most recent win in the Federico Tesio came by better than eight lengths. That is not a pace collapse from the field. That is a horse who knows this oval and runs to it.

The concern is Post 1. Breaking from the rail in a 14-horse field with early speed pressing from the outside means Sheldon Russell has to make a quick decision. Does he let him roll and clear, or does he get squeezed back and cover ground? If Taj Mahal breaks cleanly and establishes his spot without a battle, he is the horse to beat. If he gets shuffled back in the first quarter, his trip gets complicated in a hurry. He is legitimately the horse-for-the-course angle in this race. Do not dismiss him because the rail draw is uncomfortable. The form at this track is real.

2. Ocelli (Morning Line 6/1) | Trainer: D. Whitworth Beckman | Jockey: Tyler Gaffalione

Ocelli broke his maiden in his fifth start before catching the eye of every serious handicapper with a closing third at 70-to-1 in the Kentucky Derby. That Derby run was not a fluke. He ran into horses. He ran a figure. He showed up when the price was right.

The Preakness distance shortens to one and three-sixteenths miles, which gives Ocelli less ground to make his run. That could be the thing that pushes him over the top today. Gaffalione is patient and will not panic. If the pace collapses in the final turn, Ocelli could be sitting on a massive return in the exotics. His Derby figure is the signal. The 6-1 morning line reflects how seriously the oddsmaker is taking that form.

3. Crupper (Morning Line 30/1) | Trainer: Donnie Von Hemel | Jockey: Junior Alvarado

Crupper ships in as one of your deep longshots today. He likes to press the pace, which means he will be on or near the lead early. The problem is his speed figures do not grade up to this company. He is going to need a dream trip: clean air along the rail, a pace that falls apart in front of him, and the top contenders to miss the board entirely. Possible. Not probable. He is a throwout in straight win play, but in a wide-open exotic ticket at 30-to-1, you could find a reason to include him underneath.

4. Robusta (Morning Line 30/1) | Trainer: Doug O'Neill | Jockey: Rafael Bejarano

O'Neill ships him in from the Kentucky Derby field, where Robusta showed plenty of early foot but could not sustain it against the better horses. From Post 4, he is going to go after the lead. The issue is that there is early speed drawn outside of him, which means a contested opening half is likely. Horses that get into pace duels in the Preakness field and still have to run a mile and three-sixteenths almost always come back to the field. Hard to construct a winning scenario for Robusta here. Leave him off the short tickets.

5. Talkin (Morning Line 20/1) | Trainer: Danny Gargan | Jockey: Irad Ortiz Jr.

Here is where things get interesting from a value standpoint. Talkin finished third in the Blue Grass Stakes and profiles as a natural stalker, which is exactly the running style that fits Laurel's longer stretch. He is not a front-runner who needs a clean trip. He is the type who settles in second or third flight and picks up the pieces when the pace gets honest.

Irad Ortiz Jr. picking up this mount matters. Irad does not take bad horses in stakes races as a courtesy call. He sees something here. At 20-to-1, Talkin is one of the better underneath plays on the card. He belongs on your exacta and trifecta tickets. If you are building a Preakness betting ticket for the exotics, he is a strong single or part of a small group at the price.

6. Chip Honcho (Morning Line 5/1) | Trainer: Steve Asmussen | Jockey: Jose Ortiz

The other co-favorite. Chip Honcho won the Gun Runner Stakes as a juvenile and has not found the winner's circle in his three-year-old campaign yet, but the pieces are starting to line up. He faded to fifth in the Louisiana Derby, which is concerning on the surface. But Asmussen does not point horses to the Preakness without a plan.

Post 6 has historically been kind in the Preakness. Jose Ortiz on board tightens the connections considerably. He is a Kentucky Derby-winning jockey who handles pace scenarios with experience. Chip Honcho will be heavily backed. Whether his form is sharp enough after the Louisiana Derby fade is the only real question. Watch him in the paddock and the post parade before you commit.

7. The Hell We Did (Morning Line 15/1) | Trainer: Todd Fincher | Jockey: Luis Saez

Sired by Authentic, the 2020 Horse of the Year. He comes in off a runner-up finish in the Lexington Stakes at Keeneland, which is a respectable prep for this spot. The Hell We Did carries early tactical foot, and Saez will put him in contention from the break. If he can settle on the backstretch and not waste energy fighting for position, he becomes a genuine danger in the final turn.

At 15-to-1, he offers real value if you believe in the pace setup falling apart in front of him. Saez is aggressive by nature, which fits this horse's style. 8. Bull by the Horns (Morning Line 30/1) | Trainer: Saffie Joseph Jr. | Jockey: Micah Husbands

Bull by the Horns won the Rushaway Stakes at Turfway Park in a four-way photo, coming from last. The late kick is real. The question is whether his dirt speed figures translate to this level, and honestly, they come up a little short of the top horses in here. He needs a contested, honest pace that completely collapses to even sniff the board. That scenario is not impossible in a 14-horse field with multiple front-runners, but you cannot rely on it. He is a deep shot in superfectas only. Leave him off your win singles and short exotic combinations.

Pace Scenario and How This Race Sets Up

There is legitimate early speed in this field. Robusta, Chip Honcho, and Crupper all figure to push toward the front. The Hell We Did will be pressing from outside. If those horses go after each other through the first half-mile on a fast Laurel track, the pace will be honest, and the closers and stalkers will have their shot in the stretch.

Taj Mahal is the wild card in the pace equation. If he gets out of Post 1 cleanly and clears the field without pressure, he could wire the field on his home track. If he gets shuffled back, the pace question becomes less certain, and the race opens up for the mid-pack horses.
