The Del Mar Derby was inaugurated in 1945 as the Quigley Memorial Handicap and was renamed the Del Mar Derby in 1948. The race moved to turf in 1970 and is currently contested at 1 1/8 miles.
The race has occasionally been divided because of large fields, including two divisions in 1963, 1970 and 2013.
Willow O Wisp owns the race record at the current 1 1/8-mile turf distance, winning the 2005 edition in 1:45.85.
