Breeders’ Cup Classic: Sovereignty a Cinch to Repeat as Horse of the Year

The triumph was a year in the making. The confrontation with Forever Young was canceled last fall by Sovereignty’s fever a few days before the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1). This time the 4-year-old superstar was healthy and primed for a peak effort.

The 2025 Horse of the Year locked up that honor again with a 1 ¾-length victory over longshot The Puma in the $7 million Classic on Saturday. Last year’s Classic hero, Forever Young, was a fading fifth as the 8-5 favorite, finishing out of the money for the first time in a brilliant 17-race career. The expected showdown against Sovereignty again was a no-show.

Trainer Bill Mott savored a peak experience as 9-5 second choice Sovereignty and jockey Junior Alvarado surged through the stretch as dusk fell at Keeneland.

"It was a really unbelievable feeling just because I know what we missed last year," the 73-year-old Hall of Famer said. "We missed that opportunity. Look, I’m not so sure he couldn’t have done it last year. It just wasn’t meant to be."

Sovereignty Caps Hall of Fame-Worthy Career

Sovereignty finished his three-year career with eight wins in 13 starts and more than $10.5 million in earnings. The son of Into Mischief won all four of his marquee races at 1 ¼ miles: the Kentucky Derby (G1), Belmont Stakes (G1), Travers Stakes (G10 and Classic. He and stablemate Knightsbridge, who finished third in the Classic after setting the pace, will begin stallion duties next year at Jonabell Farm in Lexington.

"Sovereignty is a magnificent horse," Mott said. "It was so meaningful to win the Derby and the Belmont and Travers with him, and now a Breeders’ Cup Classic,” Mott said.

Godolphin, his owner and breeder, was 0-for-18 in the Classic, one of the few major races it hadn’t won.

"Thank God we had the opportunity to try again, and the Godolphin team made the decision to keep him racing," Mott said. "That’s a huge risk."

The sporting gesture appeared to have backfired when Sovereignty lost his first two starts of 2026 – running second in the Oaklawn Handicap (G2) and third, beaten 5¼ lengths, in the Stephen Foster (G1) at Churchill Downs. He rebounded to dominate the Whitney Stakes (G1) by 4 ¾ lengths at Saratoga before he had another setback.

A foot abscess forced him to skip the Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) on opening day at the new Belmont Park. Forever Young beat three overmatched opponents in what amounted to a paid public workout instead of a first duel with Sovereignty.

Mott always has been deadly off layoffs, and he opted to bring Sovereignty to the Classic off an 83-day break. Five solid workouts prepared him for his career’s grand finale. Mott expects the voters to award him a second Horse of the Year title.

"I don’t think there’s any doubt," he said. "There are other years you’d have to quibble about it, but I don’t know who would take that spot.

"I’m glad he won the Classic because it probably would have been difficult to make him Horse of the Year off of one win in the Whitney, even though it was a tremendous race and he proved he was back."

Who Else Clinched Championships at Breeders' Cup?

Sovereignty also clinched the Eclipse for older dirt male, and victories by seven other horses over Breeders’ Cup weekend should earn trophies for them. Here are the likely divisional champions:

  • T O Elvis (Sprint, male sprinter)
  • Ways and Means (Filly & Mare Sprint, female sprinter)
  • Nitrogen (Distaff, older dirt female)
  • Deterministic (Mile, older male turf horse)
  • Kathynmarissa (Filly & Mare Turf, older female turf horse)
  • Hughes (Juvenile, 2-year-old male)
  • Emphatic (Juvenile Fillies, 2-year-old female)
  • Fully Subscribed (second in the Distaff, 3-year-old female).
  • Golden Tempo: Despite his sixth-place dud in the Classic, Golden Tempo’s victories in the Kentucky Derby and Belmont will make him champion 3-year-old male.
