The Ballston Spa Stakes traces its history to 1983 and is named for Ballston Spa, New York, located just south of Saratoga Springs. The early version of the race was restricted to New York-bred fillies and mares and was contested at seven furlongs on dirt.
The race later evolved into the modern turf event. It moved to Saratoga in 1994 and was eventually renamed the Ballston Spa Handicap in 1997. The race received Grade III status in 1995 and was upgraded to Grade II in 2006.
Notable winners include Alinghi, Wait A While, Zagora and Lady Eli. Chad Brown has been particularly successful in the race, training eight winners through 2024.
Strike Charmer holds the race record at the current 1 1/16-mile distance, winning in 1:38.77 in 2016.
