Commonwealth Cup Betting: Aiden O’Brien Saddles Favorites

The 6-furlong Commonwealth Cup used to be the only Group 1 flat race in Britain for 3-year-olds that permitted geldings. They have not been allowed to participate since 2019, and the race was once the first age-restricted Group 1 race open to geldings in Europe overall.

At the same time, the Diamond Jubilee Stakes (now Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes) was restricted to older horses, creating a dedicated top-level sprint opportunity for the Classic generation. The Buckingham Palace Stakes was dropped from the meeting to accommodate it.

It quickly established itself as a premier race, with strong fields and globally recognized winners. The 2019 edition (won by Advertise) was rated as one of the joint-highest 3-year-old races globally that year.

This year, a jam-packed field of 22 is expected to break from the gate in the race, which has been carded as the afternoon’s second race with a post time of 10:05 a.m. ET.

The Karl Burke-trained Venetian Sun and Albert Einstein from Aidan O’Brien’s powerful Ballydoyle yard stand out as the top two contenders.

Venetian Sun is a high-class filly by Starman and the clear favorite after an explosive return to sprinting in the Sandy Lane Stakes (G2) at Haydock last out, where she powered clear by three lengths after failing in the Betfred 1000 Guineas (G1) last month.

She owns elite juvenile form, including victories in the Prix Morny (G1) and the Albany Stakes over this course a year ago.

Group 3 winner Albert Einstein, a son of Wooton Bassett, brings significant hype as a winter favorite who has shown promise over sprint distances, including a narrow second in the Carnarvon Stakes. He has the potential to deliver a big result if he runs to top form, though he faces the task of overturning Venetian Sun and a competitive field that also includes the likes of Coppull, Charles Darwin, and Outfielder.

Coronation Stakes Set to Crown Ascot Princess

Nine sophomore fillies are set to head to the gate and race a mile in the Coronation Stakes (G1). The race was created in 1840 to celebrate Queen Victoria's accession to the throne and has been a staple of the Royal Ascot meeting. Under the modern grading system introduced in 1971, it held Group 2 status for a time before being upgraded to Group 1 status in 1988. It is run over 7 furlongs and 213 yards (about one mile) and has long been a highlight of Royal Ascot, now held on the fourth day (Friday) of the five-day meeting.

The Coronation Stakes has always been a key race for top fillies and has often featured top Guineas contenders among others. It typically attracts Europe’s leading 3-year-old fillies, many coming from the 1000 Guineas, Irish 1000 Guineas, or French Poule d’Essai des Pouliches.

Last year, the Joseph G Murphy-trained Cercene upset the field at odds of 33-1, and though unraced since September, has been training for her 2026 debut. Other notable winners include champion/Group 1 winner Porta Fortuna, 1000 Guineas winner Tahiyra, Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1) winner Inspiral and other notables Alcohol Free, Alpine Star, Watch Me, Alpha Centauri, Winter, Sky Lantern, Attraction, Russian Rhythm, Ridgewood Pearl, Pretty Polly, Saucy Sue, Humble Duty, One in a Million, and Sonic Lady.

The race has produced several Classic winners and standout performers, with strong records held by jockeys like Nat Flatman and Morny Cannon (five wins each) and trainer John Porter (six wins).

On Friday, Precise (3-5), under Ryan Moore, is the one to beat after bouncing back from her seventh at Newmarket in the Betfred 1000 Guineas (G10 to win the Irish 1000 Guineas at the Curragh by more than two lengths over True Love. The Aidan O’Brien-trained Starspangledbanner owns strong Group 1 form from her juvenile season as well.

Guineas heroine True Love (3-1) will be ridden by Wayne Lordan also for O’Brien. She won last year’s Queen Mary here and looks to turn the tables on her stablemate, and is still the clear danger in a Ballydoyle-dominated renewal.
