Kentucky Derby: Top 10 Contenders (Week of 4/1/25)

Citizen Bull vs. Journalism in Santa Anita Showdown for No. 1

They’ve been 1-2 in the US Racing Kentucky Derby Contenders Top 10 for weeks, and on Saturday at Santa Anita, No. 1 Citizen Bull takes on No. 2 Journalism in a Santa Anita Derby (G1) showdown that likely will determine the favorite for the Run for the Roses.

Also on the line is whether No. 6 Barnes, 2-0 before a loss to Journalism in the San Felipe Stakes (G2) on March 1, can earn enough points to qualify for the Kentucky Derby field limited to 20 starters.

Citizen Bull makes his second start as a 3-year-old after winning the Robert B. Lewis (G3) on Feb. 1. He closed out 2024 with a victory in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) to clinch the 2-year-old championship.

With just five horses in the field, the Kentucky Derby Contenders leaderboards' points are scaled down to 75% of the 100-50-25-15-10 dispersal – 75-37.5-18.75-11.25-7.5. The highly-touted Barnes has 18.75 points and likely needs to run first or second in the Santa Anita Derby.

Blue Grass and Wood are also on tap Saturday, as well asthe UAE Derby

There are two other 200 total-point preps on Saturday, the Blue Grass Stakes (G1) at Keeneland and the Wood Memorial (G2) at Aqueduct.

In addition, the UAE Derby (G2) winner in Dubai on Saturday could earn a Kentucky Derby slot as the Euro-Mideast points leader.

The Wood Memorial features Withers winner Captain Cook at No. 9, and the Blue Grass features No. 10 River Thames, the morning-line favorite who likely needs a top 3 finish to get trainer Todd Pletcher into the Derby.

The 20-horse field for the Derby on May 3 will be mostly set by Saturday evening. The final prep is the Lexington Stakes (G3) on April 12, which is worth 20-10-6-4-2 points to the top five finishers.
