Comments: Unraced as a juvenile, Brian Lynch’s trainee has progressed quickly since finishing second in his Feb. 18 career debut to eventual Grade 1 Kentucky Derby entrant Patch. Following that one-mile Gulfstream Park maiden race, Meantime cut back to seven furlongs there and completed the trifecta on April 1 behind the now stakes-placed Time to Travel.
The colt’s maiden-breaker came three weeks later at Keeneland when overpowered six rivals in a nine-furlong contest to splash home seven and a half lengths in front on a muddy course. Skipping his allowance condition, Meantime made his stakes debut in Belmont Park’s nine-furlong Grade 3 Peter Pan Stakes on May 13 and proved best of the rest behind the victorious Timeline over a sloppy surface. He earned his career-best 91 Beyer Speed Figure in the Peter Pan and a shot a shot at a classic, the June 10 Grade 1 Belmont Stakes.
Meantime’s sire was a multiple graded stakes winner who competed in all three 2011 classics and captured the Grade 1 Preakness Stakes in the process. His stakes-placed dam has produced three stakes winners, including $1.4 million earner Sweet Reason.
Meantime breezed at Belmont Park on May 27 and Lynch plans one more work over the track for the Silverton Hill color-bearer. Hall of Famer and two-time Belmont Stakes-winning jockey Mike Smith is slated to be aboard the colt for the first time in the final leg of the Triple Crown.
