2023 Kentucky Derby Profile: Confidence Game
By US Racing Team
A $25,000 bargain purchased by Kirk Godby’s Don’t Tell My Wife Stables at the Keeneland yearling sale, Confidence Game pulled off an 18-1 upset in the Rebel Stakes (G2) at Oaklawn to gain entry into the Kentucky Derby (G1).
Trained by Keith Desormeaux, Confidence Game has shown some versatility during his career, winning two of his three races going wire-to-wire, then rallying from fifth while taken four wide for his 1-length win in the 1 1/16-mile Rebel over a sloppy track.
He comes into the Derby off a longer than usual layoff for contenders — 10 weeks.
James Graham has been aboard the Candy Ride colt in six of seven races, and has the mount again in the Derby, where he’s 0-fo-2.
After the Rebel, Graham said: “He wasn’t doing too much too soon. He had a ton left down the lane. I’m just so happy for everyone involved and especially this horse. He keeps maturing and doing things the right way. I think the sky is the limit for him.”
