Not many horses tackle a classic race in their third career start, but Emerging Market did, and while he didn’t win, splitting the field to finish 10th was not so bad considering.
The Louisiana Derby (G2) winner has been training up a storm in the past five weeks, and his connections believe he will only improve with the Derby experience and an extra five weeks to his personal timeline.
Hopefully, this time, the Belmont Stakes contender Emerging Market will have the benefit of four shoes for the entire 1¼ miles of the Belmont Stakes. Brown explained the Candy Ride colt lost a front shoe in the Derby, something that any horseman knows has a negative effect on performance. No shoes means less traction.
Brown will have a lot to focus on, Emerging Market being one of his three runners.
“Emerging Market has come out of the Derby good despite losing a shoe in the race,” Brown said. “I really like the way he’s doing. He lost a shoe in the first turn, according to Prat. He was close to a hot pace. He tried hard, but it just didn’t work out for him.
“It’s a solid field and whoever wins is going to have to run their ‘A’ race, for sure. The pace of the race is a little suspect, which probably means there will be a couple of pace horses and a couple of mid-pack horses, and definitely some horses with no speed — I know I have one of those. Hopefully, the horses will string out and organize, so not only Emerging Market, but all the horses can find their path, not too wide, and have a nice fair race for everybody.”
While this one isn’t Brown’s top runner here, according to the oddsmakers, he has some significant talent, and a mild upset is not out of the realm of possibilities. He’ll likely hold his morning line and go off even a bit higher as he sits in the shadow of the Derby winner and runner-up, but he is capable and is a must-use in exotics, especially the exacta and trifecta. Let’s build the perfect trifecta with Emerging Market for a winning ticket this Saturday.
