Breeders’ Cup 2019: Structor gives trainer Chad Brown a win in Juvenile Turf
US Racing Team
Structor came flying down the stretch and overtook the leaders in the final yards to win the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) on Friday at Santa Anita.
There was a scary moment in the stretch when long shot Graceful Kitten bumped the inside rail, but jockey Hector Issac Berrios was able to regain control with no other issues.
Structor, ridden by Jose Ortiz, was well back in the field of 14 on the turn for home but finished with a flourish to edge Billy Batts (50-1) and Gear Jockey (60-1).
Winning time for the one-mile race was 1:35.11 over a fast, firm turf course. The win gave trainer Chad Brown his 13th Breeders’ Cup triumph, and improved Structor’s record to 3-0.
After the race, Brown said he would look to race the 2-year-old daughter of Palace Malice on the dirt, and mentioned the possibility of running the filly in the 2020 Kentucky Derby.
Favorites Arizona and Decorated finished fifth and fourth, respectively.
“Chad was very confident, and just told me to wait and he went outside, and just exploded,’’ Ortiz said.
Structor returned $12.60, $7.20 and $5.20.
Earlier, Four Wheel Drive won the Juvenile Turf Sprint in the opening Breeders’ Cup race.
