Trainer Ed Moger, Jr., says his gelding “could have a shot” at pulling off a surprise.
Unlikely.
“He’s a picture of health. He looks great,” Moger said this week. “I know he didn’t run very good the last couple of times, but I still really like the horse … He’s a talented horse. Real strong.”
After winning the El Camino Real Derby at Golden Gate Fields on Feb. 11, he produced two clunkers – seventh of nine in the San Felipe (G2) at Santa Anita on March 4, and eighth of nine in the California Derby back on the synthetic surface at Golden Gate Fields on April 29. He was treated for an exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage after the San Felipe.
Nonetheless, Moger believes the Preakness, at 1 3-16 miles, could work out well for what would be his first Preakness starter.
“He couldn’t look any better, so we’re kind of throwing those out and we’re going to work him this weekend,” Moger said. “I’m sure he will work really, really good.”
Plans call for the horse to be shipped to Baltimore on Tuesday.
