April 27, 2019 (Churchill Downs) – Though it’s been a year since Justify’s impressive Triple Crown run the similarities between him and Kentucky Derby contender Improbable this year are striking and not because both are handsome chestnuts with bold, white faces and talent to spare. And like Justify before him, Improbable boasts the same connections in owners WinStar Farm, China Horse Club and Starlight Racing, as well as Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert.
But unlike Justify before him, Improbable will not be heading to the Kentucky Derby as an overwhelming favorite. Though a grade 1 winner, the son of City Zip has not won a race in two starts this year, but was second in both the Rebel Stakes and the Arkansas Derby. He will also have another new jockey in the irons – Irad Ortiz Jr. takes over for his brother Jose, who was in the irons at Oaklawn Park last out.
Improbable owns three wins and two seconds from five career starts overall and sits a solid fourth in the current Kentucky Derby odds at 9-1, which is sure to change at the post position draw set for Tuesday, April 30 at 11:00 a.m. ET at Churchill Downs.
