US Racing’s Breeders’ Cup Classic Picks
By US Racing Staff
And the winner of the Breeders’ Cup Classic will be … we’re not sure.
We asked our usracing.com staff of contributors to pick the 1-2-3 finishers in Saturday’s $6 million Classic at Keeneland Race Course. Our nine participants came up with five different choices from a 10-horse field. Now that’s what we call a competitive race.
Here’s the winning pick breakdown: Maximum Security (4), Authentic (1), Tiz the Law (1), Tacitus (1), Improbable (1), Tom’s d’Etat (1).
The picks, with comments:
“Maximum Security passes Authentic in upper stretch and gets first run on the stalkers and closers. Tiz the Law starts surging too late but gets up for second so, with Authentic holding on for third – Ed McNamara
1 Maximum Security 2 Tiz the Law 3 Authentic
“He won the Derby at 1 ¼ miles, why not the Classic at the same distance?” — Julie Basso
1 Authentic, 2 Tiz the Law, 3 Tom’s d’Etat
“Maximum Security has been the best horse in the country for two years, and will cap off his year with a resounding win that, for once, will not be taken away from him.” – Noel Michaels
1 Maximum Security 2 Tom’s d’Etat 3 Tiz the Law
“Tiz the Law moves forward here off of his second place Kentucky Derby finish. He gets post relief here and will have a much better trip as the pace sets up for him to come from just off the pace. – Ray Wallin
1 Tiz the Law 2 Improbable 3 Tom’s d’Etat
“It’s tough to argue against the purely professional Improbable as he’s in top form, has tactical speed, has been working lights out, and gets Irad Ortiz, Jr. back in the irons.” – Lynne Snierson
1 Improbable 2 Maximum Security 3 Tom’s D’Etat
“But for one race — his last — Maximum Security would be the heavy favorite. This time he’ll be ready to turn the tables and return to the winner’s circle and the best older horse in training. – Margaret Ransom
1 Maximum Security 2 Improbable 3 Tiz The Law
“Tom’s d’Etat, the old man in the field at 7, is well rested and well posted. A stumble at the start of the Whitney proved costly; he’ll be right in the hunt with a clean break.” – Mike Farrell
1 Tom’s d’Etat 2. Maximum Security 3 Improbable
“Long overdue, this guy waits for the BIG one to bust out.” – Jenny Kellner
1 Tacitus 2 Authentic 3 Tiz the Law
“Maximum Security has been the best of this bunch over two years, and is due for a huge race. The outside post may work just right for this star-crossed champion.” – Richard Rosenblatt
1 Maximum Security 2 Tiz the Law 3 Global Campaign
