December 25, 1934, was an important moment in horse racing history. Santa Anita Park's opening marked the beginning of a new era, setting the standard for racetracks around the world. Santa Anita has hosted several spectacular races. The Santa Anita Derby, which debuted in 1935, immediately became a top prep race for the Kentucky Derby, giving multiple Triple Crown contenders and winners. Similarly, the Santa Anita Handicap, one of the oldest and most famous in the country, became lovingly known as "The Hundred-Grander," with one of the richest payouts in North American racing.

The park's stunning tracks have hosted some of the finest names in horse racing. Seabiscuit, the underdog who won America's heart during the Great Depression, had some of his most memorable moments here, including his legendary victory in the 1940 Santa Anita Handicap. Other greats, such as Affirmed, the last Triple Crown winner of the 20th century, and Zenyatta, the racing queen with an almost perfect record, have left their mark on Santa Anita Park's history.
